A-50 was orginially created to link Mirabel and Ottawa (MacDonald-Cartier International Airport being unbuilt at this time). Lack of funding and the opening of Cartier Airport drove the project to abort. MTQ and Feds would have built a freeway in the Deschênes Corridor. On Deschênes Rapids, a bridge would have been built to link Aylmer with the Capital.

The ROW that was originally planned for A-50 in downtown Hull has been converted to bear an urban boulevard, built in a partnership of Federal Transportation Department, Ville de Gatineau and MTQ. This boulevard will run between the actual A-50 terminus and Aylmer area of Gatineau. This limited-access road will be numbered as R-148.
